Couch Potato Stop Motion Challenge
Individuals and small teams could register for the challenge and had to animate small scenes one after the other from home, with a potato as main character. In the end, all scenes were put together to a common film.
The own film sequence had to follow up on that last teams scene and each team had 48 hours before the own film snippet was sent to the next team.
In order to have a uniform film at the end, all teams were sent rules for the challenge about the duration of the scenes, language, format etc.
No previous knowledge was necessary. In four video tutorials, the basics of stop-motion technique, set construction, sound and the basics of the app were explained and publicly shared on Vimeo.
The challenge has already taken place several times and is very popular! The idea was born during the first Covid19 Lockdown to bring people from all over the world together online to creatively make films from home.
A success story
Potatoes from all over the world
In 2020 initially 41 teams from 11 countries took part. This resulted in five collective films with teams from Libya, Colombia, Poland, Egypt, Italy, Germany, the USA (Hawaii), Portugal, France, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. The finished films were presented at a live premiere on YouTube and Facebook.
Having become aware of the project on the internet, the Kulturrucksack Wuppertal engaged Moviemiento to carry out the challenge again for kids from Wuppertal. One film was made by eight teams.
As part of the City_Country_River series of events, there was another Challenge in 2021 with 23 teams from four countries. The films were screened in open-air cinemas of City_Country_River and the raft tour Alles im Fluss!
At the end of 2021 16 teams from 2 countries and from 9 different cities in Germany took part in the latest challenge. 2 more films were made.
To be continued…

Potatos on a visit
Moviemiento was invited to present the completed challenge from 2020 at the re:publica Netzfest in Berlin. The resulting films flickered across a large screen, questions from the audience were answered and people could animate their own small potato films live at a join-in table.
